How to Add Your University Timetable to Your Calendar

Most universities publish each student’s timetable as a personal calendar feed: a link a calendar app subscribes to, so room changes and cancelled lectures update on their own. Add the same link to Increment and it plans your study sessions and coursework around your lectures.

Find your timetable’s link

Look in your university’s online timetable, or the student portal it sits in, for Subscribe, iCal feed, Calendar feed, Export or Add to calendar. Four examples, from the universities’ own instructions:

• Southampton — sign in to SUSSED, open Online Timetable from Quick Links and follow get your calendar feed now.
• Aberystwyth — in your student record, choose Academic Record → Timetable, then use the Timetable iCal Feed button below your timetable.
• Newcastle — sign in at timetables.ncl.ac.uk; the webcal:// link is at the bottom of the page.
• Glasgow Caledonian — the timetable calendar feed page emails your personal link to you.

Elsewhere, search your university’s IT help pages for “timetable iCal” or ask the IT service desk.

Copy the link without subscribing your phone

On a phone, tapping a webcal:// link subscribes the phone’s own calendar app to it. To copy it instead, press and hold the link and choose Copy Link on an iPhone, or Copy link address in Chrome on Android.

Add the link to Increment

1. Sign in, if you have not already: open Settings (the gear in the toolbar) → Account & sync, enter your email, press Send link, and open the link from that email on the same device. A calendar link needs an account because Increment’s server keeps the link, encrypted, and fetches the calendar for you.
2. Open Settings → Connected calendars… (on a phone, the Settings tab → Connected calendars).
3. Under Subscribe by link, paste the link and press Subscribe.

The calendar’s events appear straight away. Increment checks it for changes when you open the app and every few minutes while it is open, and plans your tasks around it the next time you press Reschedule. It only reads the calendar; nothing is ever written back.

Planning around lectures

• Timetabled sessions hold time, so Increment puts your tasks and goals in the gaps between them.
• Room changes and cancellations come through when Increment next checks the feed. How quickly the feed itself changes is up to your university.
• Increment keeps about the next three months, so most of a term is visible from its start.

When it does not work

• The link is personal. It shows where you will be and when; paste it into Increment and nowhere else.
• A new link each year or term. If Increment says Link no longer works, get the new link, remove the old calendar and add the new one.
• A plain http:// link cannot be added. Try the same address with https://.
• A downloaded .ics file is a snapshot, not a feed. Import it with Settings → Import calendar…, knowing it will not update.

Questions

Can I add my timetable from my phone?

Yes. Copy the link on your phone, then paste it into Increment’s Settings tab → Connected calendars → Subscribe by link.

Does my university see anything from Increment?

Only a request for your timetable feed, from Increment’s server. Nothing about your tasks or the rest of your calendar is sent.

What if my timetable changes after I add it?

Increment reads the feed again every few minutes while it is open, so changes your university publishes arrive on their own.
